Why does stainless steel go rusty?

Column:Technical information Time:2020-03-26

1.There are dust and other metal particles attached on stainless steel surface. The condensed water formed due to humid air connects the stainless steel and the attached particles and makes the whole of them into a micro-battery, which causes an electrochemical reaction and leads to protective film damage of the stainless steel. This is the so called electrochemical corrosion.

2.Organic liquid adheres to stainless steel surface (such as melon juice, noodle soup, phlegm and etc.) turns into organic acid with water and oxygen, which will cause metal corrosion for long time to come.

3. Acid, alkali and salt substances (such as alkali water and lime water used in wall decoration) that adhere to stainless steel surface can cause local corrosion.

4. The polluted air that contains a large amount of sulfide, carbon oxide, nitrogen oxide, reacts with condensed water and constitutes sulfuric acid, nitric acid, acetic acid liquid and cause chemical corrosion.

Solution:

1. The surface of decorative stainless steel must be cleaned and scrubbed frequently to remove the attached particles and eliminate external factors that cause corrosion.

2. 316L stainless steel is a good option in coastal area for a better protection against seawater corrosion.

3. Some stainless steel in the market fail to meet corresponding national standards in chemical composition, which will cause rust as well. There - fore buyers should select products from reputable manufacturers care - fully.
